Rep. Jerry Knowles, R-Berks County, said his heart goes out to people who are suffering and knows they are sincere in their belief that medical marijuana will help them. But the former police officer argued that marijuana is dangerous and that medical marijuana will serve as a gateway to drug abuse and addiction. He stressed that medical marijuana isn't approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. "This is in direct violation of federal law," he said. 4/17/17

As a Tamaqua police officer in the 1970s, Rep. Jerry Knowles, R-Schuylkill, said he saw the evils of marijuana. In addition, Knowles said, he feared that Pennsylvania, like California, would create a medical marijuana law that is easily manipulated by people who seek bogus prescriptions to obtain a drug the federal government says is illegal for all use, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not cleared for medical use.
