Holds office Governor
“In the past seven years Alaska’s marijuana industry has flourished but is still considered a new and evolving industry in Alaska,” said Governor Dunleavy. “As we would expect to see with any new industry, concerns have been raised about the structure the industry has been operating under. A cornerstone of my administration has been to review unnecessary regulations that are a burden to business, while ensuring oversight to protect the health, life, and safety of all Alaskans. It is my hope that with the formation of the Governor’s Advisory Task Force on Recreational Marijuana, we can bring together a variety of voices and perspectives to evaluate existing provisions and consider recommendations to improve the viability of the industry.” 9/21/2022
"I support lawmakers’ work to clear criminal records of Alaskans with low-level marijuana offenses. Alaskans should not be met with barriers for conduct that is no longer a crime under state law." 4/20/2022
Governor Dunleavy at one point expressed an intent to repeal the state’s Marijuana Control Board, but he later backed off this proposal. Industry insiders have expressed concerns regarding some of the Governor’s appointments to the Board, as well as his support for the passage of enhanced criminal penalties for certain cannabis-related crimes. Nonetheless, in March 2019, Alaska regulators did finalize rules governing the licensing of on-site consumption establishments, making it the first state in the nation to do so. (Link)
In a 2018 Q&A, candidate Dunleavy announced that he did not support changes to the state's retail marijuana tax rates. (8/15/18) (Link)
