Holds office U.S. House District 11
Candidate in race for Governor on Tuesday, November 4, 2025
Sherrill said she supports home cultivation for recreational and medical purposes with “common-sense regulations, safeguards and limits.” She said she’d work with stakeholders like law enforcement to ensure the state is “doing this in a thoughtful and safe way.” (3/24/2025)
"A pro-cannabis candidate, Sherrill supports allowing medical cannabis patients and those 21 years and older to home cultivate cannabis under a framework of “common-sense regulations, safeguards and limits,” the New Jersey Monitor reported in March.
At the federal level, Sherrill voted in 2019 and 2021 in favor of passing the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement (MORE) Act, legislation that would deschedule and decriminalize cannabis by removing it from the Controlled Substances Act. She also voted multiple times in favor of passing the Secure and Fair Enforcement (SAFE) Banking Act, legislation that would bring safe harbor to depository institutions wishing to provide financial services to state-legal cannabis businesses." “As someone running for federal office who also worked as a U.S. attorney, I would like to see [marijuana] taken off the Schedule 1 controlled substances list,” Sherrill explained. “Because quite frankly, that means there’s no known medical use and it can’t be studied. And we all know that that’s simply not the case. So that’s the first thing that I would like to see happen.” (2018)
"I want to do that carefully. I have four kids. We know that when marijuana is decriminalized or legalized that crime goes down, that … you start to move in a good way against the over-incarceration of young men, but you do also see a rise in use among children and that's a big concern to me. … People have asked me about the New Jersey legislation. And even though I don't work in Trenton I have said there's reasons to move forward on this. I just would caution that if we're going to do that, we should be thoughtful about how we do that so that we can protect people." (12/6/18)
