B Sam Edney (D - NC) MEDICAL USE
Position on Medical Marijuana

From ABC13 News Interview in 2018:

Q: Do you believe marijuana should be legal either medically or recreationally or both?
"I think we need to follow suit with many other states nationwide and prioritize expanding medical marijuana immediately. The opioid epidemic that we face is a wake up call for all of us. When a doctor prescribes a medicine and our pharmacist fills that prescription the entire transaction depends on trust - trust between doctors and drug suppliers and manufacturers and trust between patient and doctor and trust between pharmacists and their suppliers. The opioid crisis has broken that trust.

Now is the time we should consider alternative forms of pain control. Medical cannabis has proven to be effective in other states where it has been legalized, and it does not have the addictive risks that the highly profitable opioids do. Medical cannabis is part of a comprehensive solution to the opioid epidemic which hurt our people and created huge profits for big pharma. I support a statewide medical program in North Carolina.

In a study conducted by the Journal of the American Medical Association, results showed that states where medical cannabis has been legalized have significantly lower state-level opioid overdose mortality rates. These states include California, Oregon, Washington, Maine, Michigan, Vermont, and many others. North Carolina needs to be next on this list."
