First, we need to abolish the death penalty because it perpetuates systemic racism and does not advance our public safety goals. We should continue the work we have done in Durham for our youth and justice-involved residents by expanding access to mental health treatment, make more effective diversion opportunities available to everyone in North Carolina, and support local authorities in their efforts to make our undocumented communities welcome in our state.
