A- Shadi Zitoon (D - TX) LEGALIZE, TAX, AND REGULATE
Position on Marijuana Legalization

The following is stated on candidate's website:

"I pledge to support legislation that:

  • Legalizes medical/recreational marijuana use.
  • Directs tax revenue from cannabis sales to fund education programs.
  • Releases and expunges the records of people convicted of low level possession offenses. "
Comments

" We should legalize medical/recreational cannabis. Full stop. It’s 2020, is this really still a question? We should intelligently legalize and regulate the growth, cultivation, manufacturing, distribution, testing, and retail of what is a multibillion-dollar industry in the rest of the country, instead of using it as a tool for harassment and incarceration. We’ve allowed other states to functionally test and build models that have been successful, not only at reducing the costs taxpayers face in terms of the failed “war on drugs,” but spurred entrepreneurial growth as well. The best plan of attack is creating a low barrier of entry model that spurs growth and investment, allowing for necessary diversification in what is sure to be a cash crop. On the flip side of that, we should be heavily taxing the sale and transactions of this commodity, just like dry counties and cities did whenever they loosened up their alcohol regulations. The proceeds from this growth, pun intended, ought to fund the development of public education, public infrastructure, and bolster the rainy day fund that we should be using to stop hundreds of thousands of Texans from losing their homes because of the current crisis."
