Candidate in race for U.S. House District 15
"We must end the War on Drugs! Blacks and latinos are also disproportionately affected by the drug war. Despite white residents and black residents having similar complaints about marijuana usage, black people are arrested for marijuana 800% higher than white people. Black people represent 12.5% of drug users but 29% of drug arrests.
The data suggests that, while all races use and sell drugs at similar rates, black Americans are arrested, charged, and convicted of drug related offenses at higher rates. Americans should take drugs seriously - there is no doubt about that. We have a moral obligation to our community to treat drug users and prevent the distribution of drugs to children. But disproportionately targeting non-white Americans does not facilitate these goals."
