Candidate in race for U.S. House District 17 on Tuesday, November 5, 2024
“I have in the past smoked marijuana. I do not currently smoke marijuana, but if I did it wouldn’t be a problem,” Jones said in an interview with the Daily News after sending a letter to Biden with 29 other House Democrats calling for the axed staffers to be reinstated.
As long as it’s kept out of the immediate workplace, Jones said weed doesn’t impair “one’s ability to perform a job or trustworthiness.”
“A policy at the White House of punishing prior use of marijuana despite a staffer’s qualifications — that is beyond dissonant,” he said. “This is simply an old school retrograde policy that flies in the face of the president’s commitments.” (3/26/21)
"Let’s legalize it, Senator." (9/14/20)
At a town hall at Duke University, Jones "spoke at length about the need for criminal justice and policing reform, calling to end qualified immunity, abolish private prisons, legalize cannabis, expunge the records of those imprisoned for marijuana use and allow those other than district attorneys to investigate and prosecute police misconduct." (9/4/20)
“It is shameful to me that the Democratic platform…rejected the legalization of marijuana—something that really should not be controversial anymore, especially given what we’ve seen in our so-called criminal justice system, which I call the criminal legal system,” he said. (8/14/20)
