In a Youtube video from the New York State Senate website Mattero says:

"One of the most important issues currently facing our state is the legalization of marijuana, and I want to make my position clear, I do not support any efforts to do so and I will be voting No. While I support medical use, personal use is something our state must avoid. Legalization will impact workplace safety, negatively affect New Yorkers' health, impede our fight against drug abuse, and endanger our young students. Additionally, it will compromise the safety of our roadways since there is no clear way to test for impairment. This is one reason why law enforcement officials oppose this effort. While supporters tought the revenue that will be raised, we must realize that any economic benefits are simply not enough to endanger our children and our residents. I have heard from many constituents from both sides of this issue, and greatly appreciate their input. With their thoughts in mind, I will be voting No to legalizing marijuana for the good of our entire state. Thank you." 3/26/21
