Position on Marijuana Legalization

In a questionnaire sent out by Chicago NORML, the candidate sent back the following answer:

Q: The Cannabis Regulation and Tax act, which was passed last year legalized up to 30 grams of cannabis for purchase by all adults over the age of 21. In doing so we also made history as a state by including expungement provisions never passed in any other state. Do you support further expungement of past cannabis convictions?

A:  Yes, I support expungement for all non-violent cannabis convictions and support a full pardon of people currently serving a prison sentence for non-violent convictions. Cannabis prohibition, like alcohol prohibition, has caused more problems than it solved, leading to an erosion of our liberties and the mass incarceration of several generations of Americans.
Position on Marijuana Decriminalization

In a questionnaire sent out by Chicago NORML, the candidate sent back the following answer:

Q: In 2016, Governor Rauner signed SB2228, making possession of up to 10 grams of cannabis a civil offense punishable by a fine of between $100 and $200. Currently in 2020 the possession of up to 30 grams is legal and comes with 0 penalties. But possession of 31 or more grams is still criminally charged. Do you support further decriminalization of possession of larger quantities of cannabis over 30 grams?

A: Yes, I fully support further decriminalization with full legalization for adults as the ideal. Adults should not be fined or imprisoned for possessing any amount of cannabis in a free society.

Position on Medical Marijuana

In a questionnaire sent out by Chicago NORML, the candidate sent back the following answer:

Q: The Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act, the pilot program for medicinal cannabis in Illinois, was made permanent as well as expanded, last year. Would you support continued expansion to the list of qualifying conditions, as well as further protections for patient supply and cost in light of adult-use legalization?

A: Yes, I support expanding the list of qualifying conditions. I would protect the patient supply by working to eliminate as many barriers as possible that prevent people from entering the cannabis cultivation market and opening dispensaries. More people growing cannabis and opening dispensaries equal greater patient supply. Licensure Also, I would work to legally allow all adults who wish to grow cannabis at home to grow as much as they want. Additionally, I would work with Illinois' Congressional delegation about cannabis reform at the federal level. On the recreational front, I would work to remove as many impediments as possible.
