B Aaron Hawkins (D - FL)

Candidate in race for State Senate District 31 on Tuesday, November 5, 2024

Position on Marijuana Legalization

With respect to state regulation, Hawkins thinks "Cannabis should be treated much like alcohol and tobacco products. As long as a person is of age they should be trusted to engage in cannabis use as they wish...Cannabis should not have been regulated to the extreme that it was for so long. It is proven fact that the regulation and enforcement of cannabis laws were used a ploy to disenfranchise and target demographics with different politics than the established powers. With this in mind and the knowledge we now have about cannabis it is ridiculous to maintain the prohibition." (Candidate Survey Response)

Hawkins believes that non-violent cannabis possession convictions expungments ought to be automatic, stating, "[cannabis] should have never been regulated as it has been for the last near 100 years...people should not be targeted for simple possession of a substance that is not a threat to society." (Candidate Survey Response)

Position on Marijuana Decriminalization

When asked to provide a position statement on decriminalizing csimple marijuna possession, Hawkins stated, "Cannabis is a relatively soft impact drug. Users of cannabis do not suffer from the same intense form of addiction as other substances and it does not lead to higher rates of crime. Most cannabis users are people who work, pay their taxes, and participate in their communities like anyone else are not a threat to society." (Candidate Survey Response)

Position on Medical Marijuana

Hawkins is in support of Florida's medical marijuana industry, stating, "Medical cannabis should be legal and available to all those who need it. I don't think there's much to debate on that." (Candidate Survey Response)
