A Makayla Venable (D - VA) LEGALIZE, TAX, AND REGULATE DECRIMINALIZE MEDICAL USE
Position on Marijuana Legalization

"I believe it’s time we legalize and regulate the responsible use of marijuana for adults. Grown folks should not be criminalized for choosing to use cannabis safely in their own homes. Just like with alcohol, we can have common-sense rules in place—age limits, safety standards, and regulations to keep it out of the hands of kids. Legalization also means we can stop wasting resources on low-level possession charges and start focusing on real public safety. It’s about freedom, fairness, and finally creating a system that works for the people—not against them." (candidate survey response)

On expungement: "If we’re going to move forward and legalize or decriminalize marijuana, then we have to make sure we’re not leaving people behind who were punished under the old laws. I believe in automatic expungement for nonviolent marijuana possession—because folks shouldn’t carry a record for something that wouldn’t even be considered a crime today. That record can hold people back from jobs, housing, education—basic things everyone deserves a fair shot at. It’s not enough to just change the laws; we need to right the wrongs. Clearing those records is a step toward real justice and healing for so many in our communities." (candidate survey response)

Position on Medical Marijuana

"I believe that if a licensed physician recommends medical cannabis, patients should have the legal right to access it. No one should be denied a treatment that could ease their pain or improve their quality of life—especially when a medical professional believes it’s the best option. Legalizing medical cannabis under a doctor’s care is about trusting the doctor-patient relationship, supporting people who are suffering, and giving folks the dignity to choose what works for them. It’s time we bring compassion, science, and common sense into our laws." (candidate survey response)
