A Alicia Atkins (D - VA) LEGALIZE, TAX, AND REGULATE DECRIMINALIZE MEDICAL USE

Candidate in race for State House District 81 on Tuesday, June 17, 2025

Position on Marijuana Legalization

"I believe in policies rooted in facts, equity, and compassion. For far too long, outdated federal laws have disproportionately harmed communities of color, strained our justice system, and stifled economic opportunity. Meanwhile, evidence and lived experience show that responsible regulated cannabis use can be both safe and beneficial when supported by public health standards and community education." (Candidate Response Survey)

"I support the legalization and responsible regulation of marijuana for adult use. Regulation allows us to implement age restrictions, product safety standards, education, and oversight—just like we do with alcohol and prescription medication."(Candidate Response Survey)

"Justice should not have a shelf life—and when laws change, so should the burdens placed on those who were unfairly criminalized. I fully support the automatic expungement of non-violent marijuana possession convictions." (Candidate Response Survey)

Position on Marijuana Decriminalization

"Criminalizing individuals—especially young people and people of color—for small amounts of marijuana has done far more harm than good. It burdens lives with criminal records, limits future opportunities, and clogs our legal system with non-violent offenses that do not threaten public safety. Decriminalization is a commonsense step that acknowledges both the changing public attitudes and the evidence that punitive approaches are ineffective and unjust. It's time we treat this issue through a lens of public health and fairness—not punishment." (Candidate Response Survey)
