A Andrew Payton (D - VA) LEGALIZE, TAX, AND REGULATE DECRIMINALIZE MEDICAL USE

Candidate in race for State House District 34 on Tuesday, November 4, 2025

Position on Marijuana Legalization

"I am publicly supporting the full legalization of marijuana in Virginia." (candidate response form)

"Yes. Marijuana can be used responsibly. At the same time we need to provide a basic safety net for those dealing with issues of addiction or abuse. Right now, instead of providing support we use marijuana to put folks into the criminal justice system." (candidate response form)

On expungement: "If we as a society decide that possession of marijuana should be legalized, then we should also clear the records of anyone with a previous conviction." (candidate survey response)

Position on Marijuana Decriminalization

"For too long we have used the criminalization of marijuana to unfairly persecute and incarcerate nonviolent offenders, especially folks of color. Marijuana can be regulated, taxed, and safely consumed, and some of that tax revenue can be used to fund programs to help those suffering from issues of drug and alcohol abuse." (candidate survey response)

"Possession of marijuana is simply not a good reason to give folks a criminal record. Let’s focus on making it safer, not criminalizing the folks using marijuana." (candidate survey response)

Position on Medical Marijuana

"If a doctor believes marijuana can help treat or alleviate a patient’s medical issue, who are we to enter into that doctor-patient decision?" (candidate survey response)
