Position on Marijuana Legalization

In 2019, the Whitmer administration oversaw the roll-out of state-licensed adult-use marijuana sales. As Governor, she has continued to publicly voice her support for legalization and for the need to enact legislation expunging the criminal records of low-level marijuana offenders. (Link)

In December 2022, Whitmer vetoed multiple cannabis-related bills, stating that they were “rushed through a lame duck session" and needed closer examination. 12/28/2022

Immediately following her election, Gov. Whitmer announced that she would pursue executive action to free those incarcerated for certain marijuana-related violations and to expunge the records of those with past convictions.
