“It’s ridiculous that legal cannabis businesses in Washington state are forced to operate entirely in cash—and it puts the safety of their employees and our neighborhoods at risk. “That’s why I’ve been working for years on SAFE Banking legislation and I’m thrilled to see bipartisan momentum behind this bill, which has now advanced further than ever in the U.S. Senate. The SAFER Banking Act is an important first step in doing the right thing for small business owners and the communities they operate in—and I’m going to keep pushing to get it across the finish line. We can’t stop there, though—we need to work towards broader cannabis policy reforms that address the long history of racial injustice and criminalization that have harmed so many communities across the country.” (9/27/23)
"No one should be in federal prison for simple marijuana possession, and it absolutely shouldn’t impact your ability to get housing, education, and so much more. But, there’s more work ahead—I’m working hard to pass my SAFE Banking Act to help cannabis shops operate safely as well as legislation I led with Senators Schumer, Wyden, and Booker to federally legalize marijuana, and I’ll keep pushing for both.” (10/6/22)
"Washington state cannabis businesses shouldn’t have to fear for their safety because of outdated banking laws. Let’s pass the #SAFEBankingAct and make sure these businesses don’t have to operate fully in cash." (4/23/22)
"Federal laws on cannabis haven’t caught up with Washington state & it’s hurting small businesses and putting workers in danger. We’ve got to pass the #SAFEBankingAct because it makes absolutely no sense that legal cannabis businesses are being forced to operate entirely in cash." (4/20/22)
"When it comes to the legal, adult use of marijuana, the voters in my home state of Washington, and in many other states, have spoken clearly and I intend to keep fighting to make sure Washington state is able to continue carrying out the will of its voters." (1/4/2018)
"While I have personal concerns about recreational marijuana use, I have long held that the voters of Washington state should have the right to pass initiatives and match our state's policies with their priorities. In a time of constrained budgets, it makes sense to allow states to make hard choices and allocate law enforcement resources as they see fit.
I understand and share some of the concerns expressed about our nation's drug policy, and its effects on civil liberties, privacy, limited budgets, and courts and prisons. These issues certainly should remain a part of the nation's ongoing drug policy debate, and I always consider these views when the Senate addresses drug issues."
