As the Chairman of the House Rules Committee, Congressman McGovern is a critical ally of the marijuana reform movement.
Holds office U.S. House District 2
H.R.1588 - Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act of 2019
H.R.1456 - Marijuana Justice Act of 2019
H.R.1595 - SAFE Banking Act of 2019
H.R.2843 - The Marijuana Freedom and Opportunity Act of 2019
H.R.2093 - STATES Act (2019-2020)
"Last week, the House passed the MORE Act, federally legalizing marijuana & creating a process to expunge convictions. I call on the Senate to pass this bill, restore justice to those affected by the systematic inequities of the War on Drugs, & legalize marijuana once & for all." (04/07/22)
"RT if you agree we need to legalize it & erase past convictions for cannabis-related offenses. #420" (04/20/21)
"Most Americans live in states where some form of cannabis is legal—but because of outdated federal law, cannabis-related businesses are forced to operate in cash. Proud to vote YES on @RepPerlmutter’s #SAFEbankingAct tonight to keep our communities, businesses, & employees safe." (04/19/21)
"Now, we need to decriminalize and deschedule cannabis while providing reinvestment, restorative justice & expungement to persons & communities of color that continue to be adversely impacted by the War on Drugs." (09/25/19)
I voted for the referendum. You look at the inequities in criminal justice system and the very discriminatory way drug laws are enforced, and also the reality out there as to how easy it is for people to get access to it, and it seemed to me to make sense. The effort to stamp out marijuana has been a miserable failure and a waste of money. That's where I came down on it.
