Position on Marijuana Legalization
Beto O'Rourke wants to end the drug war. He believes marijuana should be fully legalized and taxed. In an interview with Texas NORML Beto said he is proud to be endorsed by NORML PAC, and yet Beto still refuses a single dime of corporate PAC money accepting only small donations to represent Texas and marijuana reform. "It’s time for Texas to do the bipartisan, commonsense, fiscally smart thing and legalize marijuana. Legalizing, carefully regulating, and taxing marijuana will generate major benefits for our economy: it will bring in nearly $1 billion every year in new state revenue and reduced criminal justice costs while creating 40,000 direct jobs as well as tens of thousands of indirect jobs. It’ll also allow law enforcement agencies to spend more time and attention on addressing violent crime: right now, Texas officers spend four hours on each cannabis arrest, while clearance rates for violence crimes like homicide and rape have dropped year after year." (Forth Worth Star-Telegram, October 2022)

“We need to legalize marijuana so we no longer spend half a billion dollars locking people up and forgo another half billion dollars in revenue per day. Let’s legalize marijuana, and get this done.” (September 2022) (YouTube Link)

"We’re going to legalize marijuana in Texas." (September 2022)

“Texas puts more people in jail and prison than any other state in the union,” O’Rourke said. “So many there for non-violent drugs offenses, far too many for a possession of a substance that is legal in almost every other state in the country.” (September 2022)

Beto tweeted footage of a news story about a campaign event that said "He talked legalizing cannabis, supporting public education and abortion rights." (8/17/22)

The War on Drugs, launched by the Nixon administration, has been a "tragic failure" according to O'Rourke. "Forty years in, marijuana is just as available today in the average Texas community as it was in the 1970s," he said. Marijuana has grown more potent and now is sold in middle schools as well as high schools.

"Ending the prohibition on marijuana, and not making it a state by state issue...federally ending the prohibition on marijuana is going to save lives, saves billions of dollars, and moves us from a country that imprisons more of its citizens than any country on the face of the planet," O'Rourke said. "Our country has an incarceration rate higher than any other nation on the planet. This at a time when Jeff Sessions wants to double down on the failed war on drugs. Let's end it altogether."
