A- Paul Stoddard (D - IL) LEGALIZE, TAX, AND REGULATE
Position on Marijuana Legalization

"I support legalization of recreational marijuana. I have seen no evidence that marijuana is any worse than alcohol. Also, widespread ignoring of marijuana laws leads to a scofflaw mentality among its users. Any money spent on enforcement is money we could much better spend elsewhere, vs. money we could actually make by taxing it. The Colorado model seems to be working well, and I would be probably start there as a model for Illinois."  (Daily Herald candidate profile, 02/13/18)

"legalized and taxed. It’s smarter for us to generate revenue rather than spend money to enforce marijuana laws. Marijuana usage today is like alcohol usage during prohibition – common, and fueling criminal activity. In addition, there are other uses for cannabis, such as the production of hemp. Hemp could be an extremely valuable third crop for our region, after corn and soybeans.  Other states such as Colorado and Washington have already done this, and we can follow their lead – employing what works, and avoiding what doesn’t."  (Daily Chronicle, 10/04/18)
