Senator Welch has claimed that the federal governemnt should defer to states to decide whether marijuana is legalized. He supports Vermont legalizing marijuana without much thought to the thousands of Americans in states with conservtive legislatures that will likely not ever legalize marijuana on their own. He supports the SAFE Banking Act which will allow cannabis companies to have more access to banks.

Senator Bernie Sanders supports the legalization of marijuana nationwide, full record expungement of those who have been harmed, and creating an industry that allows participation and ownership by those from the communities hardest hit by criminalization. 

He was the first Senator in U.S. history to introduce a bill to end marijuana prohibition.
